Powdery Mildew on Banana Leaves
Commonly affects: Musa acuminata, M. balbisiana (Banana)
A white powdery coating occasionally develops on leaf surfaces in humid, still conditions with poor airflow, though this is less common than on many other plants.
Potential Causes
- 1Fungal spores favoured by humidity and dense, still growing conditions
- 2Overcrowded plantings restricting airflow
- 3Shaded, humid indoor growing environments
Solution Steps
- 1Improve airflow around the plant by increasing spacing or adding a fan indoors
- 2Apply a sulphur or potassium bicarbonate fungicide at first signs
- 3Water at the base rather than overhead
- 4Remove heavily affected leaves
Prevention Tip
Powdery mildew is relatively uncommon on bananas compared to other issues â good airflow alone usually prevents it from becoming established.
