Lower leaves yellow and wilt progressively, often on one side of the plant first, despite adequate soil moisture. The wilting is permanent and advances upward as the fungus colonises the vascular system. A diagnostic sign is brown to reddish streaking inside the stem when sliced open lengthwise, marking the blocked water-conducting tissue.

The short answer

Wilting that affects one side of the plant or one branch at a time, while the soil is moist, is vascular wilt. Cut a wilted stem across and look for a brown ring inside the otherwise pale tissue — that discolouration is the diagnosis. There is no cure. The plant should be removed and destroyed, and the same crop family should not be replanted in that soil.

Confirm it before you treat it

  1. 1Water the plant and wait a few hours. Drought wilt recovers; vascular wilt does not. This single test separates the two.

Prompt removal is about protecting next season, not this plant.

Common mistakes

  • Watering more because the plant is wilting. The soil is already moist; adding water accelerates spread and adds root rot on top.
  • Composting the plant. Home compost rarely gets hot enough to kill the spores, and you then spread them across the whole garden.
  • Applying fungicide. Nothing available to a home grower reaches a pathogen inside the vascular system. This is a removal-and-rotation problem.
  • Replanting the same crop in the same spot next year. This is how a single infection becomes a permanent feature of the bed.
  • Reusing pots and stakes without disinfecting. Spores survive on both and carry the infection straight to a new plant.

Prevention is far more effective than treatment — use sterile substrate, sanitise tools between plants, and quarantine new arrivals. Avoid root damage and waterlogging, both of which create the entry points and stress that allow Fusarium to take hold.

Can the plant be saved?
No. Once the vascular tissue is colonised there is no treatment, and keeping the plant only builds up spores in the soil.
Is the fruit safe to eat?
Fruit already formed and undamaged is safe. The pathogen affects the plant's vascular system, not the fruit as food.
How long does it survive in soil?
Resting spores persist for many years — commonly cited as up to a decade — which is why rotation has to be measured in years, not seasons.
Can I solarise the soil?
It reduces the population in the top layer in a hot climate, but rarely eliminates it. Resistant cultivars are the more reliable answer.
How do I tell it from Verticillium?
In practice you often cannot without a lab. It does not matter much: removal, sanitation and rotation are the response to both.
