Fusarium Wilt on Basil
Commonly affects: Ocimum basilicum (Basil)
One side of the plant wilts and yellows while the other side may still look healthy, often with dark streaking visible inside the stem when cut open. Affected plants decline steadily and rarely recover once symptoms are advanced.
Potential Causes
- 1Fusarium oxysporum fungus living in the soil and entering through the roots
- 2Infected seed or transplants introducing the pathogen to previously clean soil
- 3Warm soil temperatures favouring fungal activity
- 4Planting basil in the same soil location repeatedly without rotation
Solution Steps
- 1Remove and destroy affected plants immediately, including the root system, to limit spread to healthy plants nearby.
- 2Avoid replanting basil in the same soil for at least 3�4 years, since the fungus persists in soil long-term.
- 3Sterilise any tools used on infected plants before using them elsewhere.
- 4Grow future basil in fresh potting mix or a different garden location entirely.
Prevention Tip
Since Fusarium wilt has no effective cure once established, prevention through soil rotation and buying disease-free seed or transplants is the only reliable long-term strategy.
