Yellowing Leaves on Basil
Commonly affects: Ocimum basilicum (Basil)
Leaves turn pale yellow, typically starting with older, lower foliage while new growth at the top stays green. Growth may also slow overall compared to expected vigour.
Potential Causes
- 1Overwatering, which is one of the most common causes of yellowing in container-grown basil
- 2Nutrient depletion in soil that hasn't been fed in several weeks
- 3Insufficient light reducing the plant's overall vigour
- 4Root-bound conditions restricting nutrient and water uptake
Solution Steps
- 1Check soil moisture before watering again � basil prefers evenly moist but not waterlogged soil, and often gets overwatered out of habit.
- 2Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength if the plant hasn't been fed recently.
- 3Move to a brighter location if the current spot receives limited direct light.
- 4Check the root ball for pot-bound roots and size up the container if needed.
Prevention Tip
Let the top 2�3 cm of soil dry out between waterings � basil's yellowing is far more often caused by overwatering than by underwatering.
