Bacterial Leaf Spot on Bell Pepper
Commonly affects: Capsicum annuum, Grossum Group (Bell Pepper)
Small, dark, water-soaked spots appear on leaves, sometimes with a yellow halo, occasionally also affecting fruit with raised, scab-like lesions.
Potential Causes
- 1Bacterial infection favoured by warm, wet conditions and overhead watering
- 2Water splashing contaminated soil onto lower leaves
- 3Working with wet plants, spreading bacteria on hands or tools between plants
Solution Steps
- 1Remove and destroy severely affected foliage
- 2Water at the base rather than overhead, avoiding wetting foliage
- 3Avoid working with plants while they're wet, since this spreads bacteria easily
- 4Apply a copper-based bactericide preventively in warm, wet conditions known to favour this disease
Prevention Tip
Avoiding overhead watering and not handling wet plants are the two simplest, most effective preventive steps against bacterial leaf spot on peppers.
