Bell Pepper Flowers Falling Off Without Setting Fruit
Commonly affects: Capsicum annuum, Grossum Group (Bell Pepper)
Flowers form and open normally but drop off within days without ever developing into fruit.
Potential Causes
- 1Temperature stress — bell peppers drop flowers when nighttime temperatures fall below about 13°C or daytime temperatures exceed about 32°C
- 2Insufficient pollination, since peppers need some pollinator activity or wind movement to set fruit reliably
- 3Inconsistent watering or drought stress during flowering
- 4Excess nitrogen fertiliser encouraging leafy growth at the expense of fruit set
Solution Steps
- 1Grow bell peppers in a temperature range that avoids both extreme cold nights and very hot days where possible
- 2Gently shake flowering stems or use a small brush to hand-pollinate if natural pollinator activity seems limited
- 3Maintain consistent, even watering through the flowering period
- 4Reduce nitrogen fertiliser and switch to a bloom-supporting, phosphorus-inclusive feed during flowering
Prevention Tip
Temperature stress outside the plant's comfortable range is the single most common cause of pepper flower drop — timing plantings to avoid extreme heat or cold helps significantly.
