Growth
Small or Thin-Walled Bell Peppers
Commonly affects: Capsicum annuum, Grossum Group (Bell Pepper)
Fruits mature but stay smaller than expected for the variety, or have noticeably thin, less crisp walls.
Potential Causes
- 1Insufficient feeding, since bell peppers need consistent nutrition (particularly potassium and phosphorus) to develop full-sized, thick-walled fruit
- 2Heat stress during fruit development affecting wall thickness and size
- 3Overcrowded planting increasing competition for light, water, and nutrients
- 4Excessive fruit load on the plant relative to its size and vigour
Solution Steps
- 1Feed regularly with a balanced fertiliser through the growing season, adjusting toward more potassium and phosphorus once flowering begins
- 2Ensure adequate spacing between plants to reduce competition
- 3Consider removing some excess fruit early in development to let remaining fruit grow larger and thicker-walled
- 4Maintain consistent watering, since heat and drought stress both affect fruit quality
Prevention Tip
Consistent feeding through fruit development, not just at planting, is what produces the thick, crisp walls bell peppers are prized for.
