Yellowing Leaves on Colocasia
Commonly affects: Colocasia esculenta (Taro / Elephant Ear)
A leaf turns yellow, sometimes starting at the base of the leaf stem, before eventually collapsing and dying back.
Potential Causes
- 1Natural aging â Colocasia regularly sheds older, lower leaves as part of its normal growth cycle, especially as new leaves emerge
- 2Nutrient deficiency in depleted soil, since Colocasia is a heavy feeder given its fast, large-leaved growth
- 3Underwatering, since this plant prefers consistently moist to boggy soil and dries out poorly compared to most houseplants
Solution Steps
- 1Accept the oldest leaf yellowing and dying back periodically as completely normal, especially if new leaves keep emerging
- 2Feed regularly with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season, since Colocasia's rapid growth demands significant nutrients
- 3Increase watering frequency significantly, keeping soil consistently moist and never allowing it to dry out completely
- 4Trim yellowed leaves at the base once fully dead
