Growth

Curved or Misshapen Cucumbers

Commonly affects: Cucumis sativus (Cucumber)

Fruit develops a curved, hooked, or otherwise irregular shape rather than the expected straight, uniform form.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Incomplete pollination, where uneven seed development causes uneven growth along the fruit
  2. 2Water or nutrient stress during fruit development
  3. 3Fruit crowded against another cucumber, stem, or trellis wire as it grows

Solution Steps

  1. 1Improve pollination by encouraging bee activity and avoiding pesticide use during flowering
  2. 2Maintain consistent watering and feeding through fruit development
  3. 3Train vines on a trellis to give developing fruit room to hang freely
  4. 4Note that curved fruit is still fully edible, just cosmetically different

Prevention Tip

Trellising cucumbers so fruit hangs freely, combined with good pollination, produces the straightest, most uniform fruit.
