Powdery Mildew on Ferns

Commonly affects: Various ferns (Polypodiopsida)

A white, powdery coating develops on frond surfaces, particularly in humid but poorly-ventilated conditions.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Fungal spores favoured by high humidity combined with still, stagnant air
  2. 2Overcrowded plants restricting airflow
  3. 3Temperature fluctuations contributing to condensation on fronds

Solution Steps

  1. 1Improve air circulation around the plant with a small fan
  2. 2Remove heavily affected fronds
  3. 3Avoid overhead watering or misting that leaves fronds wet for extended periods
  4. 4Apply a sulphur-based or potassium bicarbonate fungicide if the problem persists

Prevention Tip

Good airflow alongside high humidity — not high humidity alone — is what keeps ferns free of powdery mildew.
