Flower Spikes Fading or Browning Quickly

Commonly affects: Lavandula angustifolia / L. x intermedia (Lavender)

Flower spikes open normally but fade, brown, or dry out faster than expected, cutting the display short.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Natural end of the bloom cycle, since lavender flowers have a finite bloom period that varies by variety
  2. 2Heat stress during an unusually hot spell accelerating flower fading
  3. 3Underwatering during the flowering period, since even drought-tolerant lavender benefits from some moisture while actively flowering

Solution Steps

  1. 1Deadhead spent flower spikes promptly to encourage a potential second flush of blooms in some varieties
  2. 2Provide a little extra water during active flowering, especially during hot spells, without overdoing it
  3. 3Harvest flowers for drying at their peak if fading seems tied to the natural end of the bloom cycle rather than a care issue

Prevention Tip

Prompt deadheading after the main bloom fades sometimes encourages a second, smaller flush of flowers later in the season on many lavender varieties.
