Lavender Not Flowering
Commonly affects: Lavandula angustifolia / L. x intermedia (Lavender)
The plant grows healthy foliage but produces few or no flower spikes, or flowering is noticeably sparse compared to expectations.
Potential Causes
- 1Insufficient sun — lavender needs full sun (at least 6-8 hours) to flower well
- 2Overly rich or fertile soil, since excess nitrogen favours leafy growth over flowering
- 3Overwatering causing general stress that suppresses flowering
- 4A young or recently-transplanted plant not yet established enough to flower fully
Solution Steps
- 1Ensure the plant receives full, direct sun for most of the day
- 2Avoid rich fertiliser or heavily amended soil — lavender actually flowers best in lean, average soil
- 3Reduce watering to the minimum needed, since lavender thrives on relative neglect once established
- 4Be patient with young plants, since flowering often improves significantly in the second and third years
