Lemon Tree Not Producing Fruit
Commonly affects: Citrus limon (Lemon Tree)
The tree grows and flowers but sets little to no fruit, or fruit forms and then drops before maturing.
Potential Causes
- 1Insufficient pollination, since indoor-grown lemon trees especially may lack natural pollinator activity
- 2Insufficient light, since citrus needs substantial direct sun to flower and fruit well
- 3The tree not yet mature enough, since lemon trees grown from seed can take many years to fruit, while grafted nursery trees fruit sooner
- 4Environmental stress (temperature swings, inconsistent watering) during flowering causing fruit drop
Solution Steps
- 1Hand-pollinate flowers with a small, soft brush, transferring pollen between flowers, especially for indoor-grown trees
- 2Provide as much direct sun as possible, ideally 8+ hours, moving the tree outdoors for summer if practical
- 3Choose a grafted nursery tree rather than growing from seed if fruiting sooner is the goal
- 4Maintain stable temperature and consistent watering through the flowering and early fruit-set period
