Bud Blast — Orchid Buds Dropping Before Opening
Commonly affects: Phalaenopsis spp. and other Orchidaceae (Orchid)
Developing flower buds turn yellow or shrivel and drop off the spike before ever opening, sometimes affecting the entire spike at once.
Potential Causes
- 1Sudden environmental changes — temperature swings, cold drafts, or being moved to a new location
- 2Low humidity causing buds to dry out and abort
- 3Exposure to ethylene gas from ripening fruit, cigarette smoke, or gas appliances nearby
- 4Underwatering during the critical bud development stage
Solution Steps
- 1Keep the plant in a stable location away from drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning once a spike begins developing
- 2Increase humidity around the plant during bud development
- 3Keep the plant away from ripening fruit and other ethylene sources
- 4Maintain consistent watering through the budding period without letting the plant dry out completely
Prevention Tip
Once a flower spike starts developing buds, avoid moving the plant or exposing it to any sudden environmental change until blooming is complete.
