Mealybugs on Orchids

Commonly affects: Phalaenopsis spp. and other Orchidaceae (Orchid)

White, cottony masses cluster in leaf axils, on flower spikes, and around the base of leaves, secreting honeydew and weakening the plant.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Warm, humid, sheltered conditions favouring mealybug establishment
  2. 2Introduction from a nearby infested plant
  3. 3Dense growth providing hidden shelter for colonies

Solution Steps

  1. 1Dab visible colonies with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol
  2. 2Spray thoroughly with insecticidal soap, reaching into leaf axils and crevices
  3. 3Isolate the affected plant until the infestation is fully cleared
  4. 4Repeat treatment every 7-10 days for several cycles to catch newly hatched mealybugs

Prevention Tip

Check leaf axils and the base of flower spikes carefully — these sheltered spots are where mealybug colonies hide before becoming obvious.
