Orchid Not Reblooming
Commonly affects: Phalaenopsis spp. and other Orchidaceae (Orchid)
The plant stays healthy with good leaves but fails to produce a new flower spike season after season, or spikes form but never open into flowers.
Potential Causes
- 1Insufficient light — orchids need bright, indirect light to bloom, and many indoor spots are too dim
- 2Lack of the temperature drop many orchids need at night to trigger flowering (typically a 5-8°C difference)
- 3Over-fertilising with a high-nitrogen feed that favours leaf growth over flowering
- 4The plant not yet mature enough, or still recovering from stress
Solution Steps
- 1Move to a brighter spot, such as an east-facing window with strong indirect light
- 2Allow a natural night-time temperature drop if possible, since many Phalaenopsis need this to initiate spiking
- 3Switch to a bloom-booster fertiliser (higher phosphorus) once or twice before the expected blooming season
- 4Be patient with a plant that's recently been repotted or stressed, since it may skip a bloom cycle to recover
