Salt and Fertiliser Buildup on Orchid Roots

Commonly affects: Phalaenopsis spp. and other Orchidaceae (Orchid)

A white, crusty residue builds up on the potting medium surface or on roots, and the plant may show root tip burn or reduced vigour despite regular feeding.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Fertiliser salts accumulating in the potting medium over time without being flushed out
  2. 2Feeding too frequently or at too high a concentration
  3. 3Hard tap water contributing additional mineral buildup

Solution Steps

  1. 1Flush the pot thoroughly with plain water every 4-6 weeks, letting it drain completely, to clear accumulated salts
  2. 2Feed at a diluted 'weakly, weekly' strength rather than full concentration less often
  3. 3Consider using filtered or rain water if tap water is very hard

Prevention Tip

The 'weakly, weekly' feeding approach — diluted fertiliser applied more often — reduces salt buildup compared to occasional full-strength feeding.
