Viral Infection in Orchids

Commonly affects: Phalaenopsis spp. and other Orchidaceae (Orchid)

Leaves develop a mottled or streaked pattern of light and dark patches, sometimes with a break in flower colour pattern, and overall vigour declines gradually.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Various orchid viruses (such as Cymbidium mosaic virus), often spread by contaminated cutting tools
  2. 2No cure exists once a plant is infected
  3. 3Virus sometimes introduced through infected divisions or nursery stock

Solution Steps

  1. 1Isolate the suspected plant from other orchids to prevent tool-based spread
  2. 2Always sterilise cutting tools between plants, ideally with a flame or bleach solution, not just wiping
  3. 3There is no treatment — affected plants can be kept for their own sake but shouldn't be used for propagation or divided
  4. 4Source new orchids from reputable growers who test for common viruses
