Wrinkled or Pleated Leaves on Orchids

Commonly affects: Phalaenopsis spp. and other Orchidaceae (Orchid)

Leaves develop a wrinkled, accordion-like, or pleated texture rather than staying smooth and firm, sometimes accompanied by a dulled colour.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Root loss (from rot or old age) leaving the plant unable to take up enough water to keep leaves plump
  2. 2Underwatering, especially in fast-draining bark mix that dries quickly
  3. 3Low humidity accelerating water loss from the leaves faster than roots can replace it

Solution Steps

  1. 1Check root health first — wrinkling combined with few or damaged roots points to a root problem needing repotting
  2. 2If roots are healthy, increase watering frequency slightly or improve humidity around the plant
  3. 3Repot into fresh bark if the current medium has broken down and no longer holds moisture well
