Yellowing Leaves on Papaya

Commonly affects: Carica papaya (Papaya)

Older, lower leaves turn yellow and eventually drop, while newer growth at the top of the tree stays a healthier green.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Natural lower leaf senescence as the tree grows and the trunk elongates — a normal process for papaya
  2. 2Nutrient deficiency, particularly nitrogen, if yellowing is more widespread than just the oldest leaves
  3. 3Overwatering stressing roots and reducing nutrient uptake
  4. 4Viral infection (ringspot) if yellowing comes with mottling and distortion

Solution Steps

  1. 1Accept some lower leaf drop as normal, since papaya naturally sheds its oldest leaves as it grows taller
  2. 2Apply a balanced fertiliser if yellowing extends beyond just the oldest leaves
  3. 3Check watering practices and improve drainage if overwatering is suspected
  4. 4Rule out ringspot virus if yellowing comes with leaf mottling or distortion

Prevention Tip

Some lower leaf yellowing and drop is completely normal for papaya as the trunk grows taller — only worry if it's spreading to newer growth.
