Root-Knot Nematodes on Passion Fruit

Commonly affects: Passiflora edulis (Passion Fruit)

The vine shows general decline, stunted growth, and wilting in hot weather despite adequate water. Roots, when dug up, show small knotted galls along their length.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) feeding on root tissue and forming galls
  2. 2Sandy soil, which nematodes move through and colonise easily
  3. 3Continuous planting in infested soil without rotation

Solution Steps

  1. 1Remove and destroy severely affected vines along with as much root material as possible
  2. 2Solarise soil with clear plastic over a hot summer to reduce nematode populations
  3. 3Incorporate organic matter to support beneficial soil organisms that suppress nematodes
  4. 4Consider nematode-resistant rootstock for replanting
