Commonly affects: Epipremnum aureum — Pothos, Scindapsus, and related aroids
Leaves develop a fine bronze or silver stippled pattern — thousands of tiny pale dots where mites have pierced the leaf cells. Fine silken webbing appears between leaves and stems, particularly at the growing tip. In heavy infestations the webbing may cover the entire plant. The plant's overall vigour declines rapidly. Spider mites (Tetranychus urticae and relatives) are not insects but arachnids — they are not killed by insecticides and require specific miticides or contact treatments. They thrive in hot, dry indoor conditions and can complete a full life cycle in 7 days at 30°C.
Potential Causes
- 1Hot, dry indoor conditions (>25°C, <40% RH) — the primary driver of spider mite population explosions
- 2Introduction from infected plants or from outdoor soil used indoors
- 3Air conditioning or heating that creates very low humidity environments
- 4Dusty leaves preventing the plant from naturally deterring early mite colonisation
Solution Steps
- 1Immediately isolate the plant from all others — spider mites disperse on air currents and clothing.
- 2Take the plant to a shower or sink and spray the entire plant forcefully with water, rotating to reach all leaf undersides. This physically removes and drowns the mites.
- 3Wipe every leaf surface (both sides) with a damp cloth or cotton pad dipped in water with a drop of dish soap.
- 4Spray with neem oil solution (5 ml/L) or insecticidal soap weekly for 4-6 cycles, focusing on leaf undersides where mites congregate.
- 5Increase humidity around the plant to above 60% — spider mites cannot reproduce effectively above 70% RH.
- 6For severe infestations, use a specific miticide (abamectin or bifenazate) — rotate modes of action to prevent resistance.
Prevention Tip
Regular misting, pebble trays, or a room humidifier creates conditions hostile to spider mites. Keeping leaves clean and dust-free also removes early colonies before they establish.
