Pothos Cutting Stem Rot — Node Decay in Water & Substrate Propagation

Commonly affects: Epipremnum aureum — cuttings during water or substrate propagation

Stem cuttings placed in water or moist substrate turn soft, brown, and slimy at the submerged cut end, progressing upward toward the node and ultimately killing the cutting before roots form. The water in the propagation vessel turns green or cloudy. Pothos is one of the easiest plants to propagate, but improper technique — particularly submerging too much stem tissue, using stagnant warm water, or propagating damaged cuttings — creates ideal conditions for the bacteria and water moulds that cause stem rot before adventitious roots form.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Submerging leaf tissue (not just the stem) in the propagation water — decomposing leaf matter feeds bacterial populations that attack the stem
  2. 2Stagnant water that is not changed frequently enough, allowing bacteria and algae to proliferate
  3. 3Clear glass or plastic containers that allow light to reach the water, fuelling algae and bacterial growth
  4. 4Cuttings taken from unhealthy or diseased parent plants carrying pathogens into the propagation vessel

Solution Steps

  1. 1Take cuttings just below a node (1 cm below the bump). Remove all leaves except 1-2 at the top of the cutting — no leaf material should be submerged.
  2. 2Use opaque containers (dark glass, painted pots) to exclude light from the water.
  3. 3Change the water completely every 5-7 days with fresh room-temperature filtered or distilled water.
  4. 4Add a small piece of activated charcoal to the vessel to inhibit bacterial growth between water changes.
  5. 5If rot has started, cut back to firm tissue, air-dry for 30 minutes, then return to fresh water.
  6. 6Transfer to substrate once roots reach 3-5 cm — extended water propagation increases rot risk significantly.

Prevention Tip

Take only healthy cuttings with at least one intact node and one leaf. Allow the cut end to callous for 15-30 minutes before placing in water — this reduces the entry point for bacteria.
