Pothos Thrips — Silvery Leaf Scarring and Deformed New Growth

Commonly affects: Epipremnum aureum — Pothos and most tropical aroids

Leaves develop a characteristic silvery, shiny, or bronze stippled surface as thrips rasp and suck the contents of individual surface cells. New leaves emerge deformed, curled, or with brown streaks. Black thrips frass (excrement) dots appear on the underside of leaves. Thrips (order Thysanoptera) are slender, 1-2 mm insects barely visible to the naked eye. They are particularly damaging because they feed on developing tissue inside rolled new leaves before emergence, causing deformation that persists for the life of the leaf.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Introduction from infested plant nursery stock — thrips are one of the most common hitchhikers on new plant purchases
  2. 2Entry through open windows in summer when adult thrips are active outdoors
  3. 3Spread from infested plants within the same collection via air movement
  4. 4Warm, dry conditions accelerating thrip reproduction and life cycle completion

Solution Steps

  1. 1Isolate the plant immediately. Place yellow or blue sticky traps near the plant to capture adult thrips and monitor population levels.
  2. 2Spray thoroughly with insecticidal soap (2% concentration) or neem oil solution, covering all leaf surfaces including undersides and the soil surface.
  3. 3Repeat treatment every 5-7 days for 6-8 cycles — critical to intercept pupae that drop to the soil to complete development.
  4. 4Apply Steinernema feltiae (entomopathogenic nematodes) as a soil drench to target pupating thrips in the substrate.
  5. 5For severe infestations, use spinosad-based insecticide — the most effective contact treatment for thrips.
  6. 6Blue sticky traps catch more thrips than yellow — use both colours for monitoring.

Prevention Tip

Quarantine all new plants for 4 weeks and inspect emerging leaves with a magnifying lens before introducing to an established collection. Thrips are nearly invisible until populations are large.
