Growth
Fruit Splitting on Pumpkins
Commonly affects: Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima, C. moschata (Pumpkin)
Cracks appear on the pumpkin's skin, sometimes shallow and cosmetic, other times deep enough to expose the flesh underneath, typically appearing during rapid growth phases.
Potential Causes
- 1Inconsistent watering â a dry spell followed by heavy watering or rain causing rapid, uneven expansion
- 2Very rapid growth rate outpacing the skin's ability to stretch, especially in giant pumpkin varieties
- 3Fruit approaching full size with continued heavy watering that's no longer needed
Solution Steps
- 1Water consistently and evenly throughout the growing season rather than allowing extreme dry-wet cycles.
- 2Reduce watering slightly in the final weeks before expected harvest to help firm up the skin.
- 3Harvest split fruit promptly if the crack is minor, since the fruit is still usable but prone to rot.
- 4Mulch heavily to buffer soil moisture swings during hot, dry weather.
Prevention Tip
Even, consistent watering all season is the single best defence against splitting â this is especially critical during the fastest growth phase when fruit can gain significant size daily.
