Mosaic Virus on Pumpkin Plants

Commonly affects: Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima, C. moschata (Pumpkin)

Leaves develop a mottled light-and-dark green pattern, sometimes with distorted, narrowed, or curled shape. Fruit can show raised bumpy patches or a blotchy mottled colour pattern, and overall vine vigour declines.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Cucumber mosaic virus or other Cucurbita-infecting viruses, spread by aphids feeding on infected plants first
  2. 2Infected seed occasionally introducing the virus directly
  3. 3Weeds nearby acting as a reservoir for the virus between growing seasons

Solution Steps

  1. 1Remove and destroy infected plants — there is no cure for viral infections once established.
  2. 2Control aphid populations aggressively, since they're the primary means of virus transmission between plants.
  3. 3Remove nearby weeds that could serve as an overwintering virus reservoir.
  4. 4Source certified virus-free seed for future plantings.

Prevention Tip

Since mosaic virus has no treatment, aphid control is effectively disease prevention — keeping aphid populations low is the most practical defence.
