Snake Plant Leaf Splitting — Physical Damage, Rapid Growth & Temperature Stress

Commonly affects: Sansevieria trifasciata / Dracaena trifasciata — wide-leaf cultivars

Vertical splits appear along the length of otherwise healthy leaves, typically running parallel to the leaf veins. The splits may be clean and sharp, or ragged. Leaves remain firm and green except at the split edges. Splitting in snake plants is almost always from physical causes — rapid rehydration after drought (cells expand faster than the leaf can accommodate), mechanical damage from contact with objects, or extreme temperature differentials causing expansion stress. It is not a disease or pathogen.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Rapid rehydration after severe drought — cells absorb water faster than the epidermis can stretch
  2. 2Physical contact with doorframes, furniture, or other objects in confined spaces
  3. 3Extreme temperature differentials (cold draughts against warm leaves) causing localised contraction stress
  4. 4Mechanical damage from pets, children, or accidental impacts

Solution Steps

  1. 1Identify and address the cause: if splitting follows drought + rehydration, establish a more regular (if infrequent) watering schedule.
  2. 2Move the plant away from high-traffic areas or objects it contacts.
  3. 3Split leaves cannot be repaired — accept them as they are or remove them for aesthetics.
  4. 4Ensure the plant is not against cold windows or in paths of cold air draughts.
  5. 5The split leaves remain photosynthetically functional and do not need to be removed unless cosmetically unacceptable.

Prevention Tip

Avoid allowing snake plants to become severely dehydrated before watering — while they tolerate drought, extreme drought followed by flooding can cause splitting. Monthly watering in summer prevents this.
