Leaf sections cut for propagation turn mushy and rot from the cut end before producing roots, or root successfully but produce only plain green pups (variegation loss). Two distinct problems are grouped here because they share the propagation context. Leaf rot in cuttings is the result of planting cut sections in moist substrate before a callous forms. Variegation loss is an inherent genetic limitation of leaf-cutting propagation: variegated cultivars (like Laurentii with its yellow margins) revert to all-green when propagated from leaves — variegation in these cultivars is in the outer tissue only and is not reproduced by leaf cells.
Potential Causes
- 1Planting cuttings in moist substrate before the cut end has calloused — bacteria colonise the wound immediately
- 2Too much moisture in the propagation substrate causing rot before adventitious roots form
- 3Propagating variegated cultivars by leaf cutting — genetically, leaf cells of marginal-variegated Sansevierias cannot produce variegated offsets
Solution Steps
- 1Allow all cut surfaces to callous for a minimum of 24-48 hours in open air before planting.
- 2Use bone-dry substrate for snake plant propagation — do not water until roots are established (3-5 weeks).
- 3Cut leaf sections at least 5-7 cm long with a clean upward V-notch at the base to increase surface area.
- 4Mark the basal end of each cutting (the end that was closest to the soil) — cuttings inserted upside-down will not root.
- 5For variegated cultivars (Laurentii, Futura Superba): propagate by division of rhizomes only to preserve variegation. Leaf cuttings will root but produce all-green pups.
- 6Roots typically form at the basal cut end in 4-8 weeks when ambient temperature is above 20°C.
