White Crust on Soil Surface of ZZ Plant Pots

Commonly affects: Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ Plant)

A white, crusty residue builds up on the potting soil surface or pot rim, sometimes accompanied by reduced vigour.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Fertiliser salts accumulating in the potting medium over time without being flushed out
  2. 2Hard tap water contributing additional mineral buildup
  3. 3Feeding too frequently or at too high a concentration for this slow-growing, low-demand plant

Solution Steps

  1. 1Flush the pot thoroughly with plain water every couple of months, letting it drain completely, to clear accumulated salts
  2. 2Feed at a diluted, reduced strength given ZZ Plant's naturally low nutrient demands
  3. 3Consider filtered or rain water if tap water is very hard
  4. 4Scrape away visible surface crust and top-dress with fresh soil if buildup is significant

Prevention Tip

Since ZZ Plant grows slowly and needs little feeding, it's especially prone to salt buildup if fed at normal houseplant strength — dilute further than usual.
