Yellowing Leaves on ZZ Plant

Commonly affects: Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ Plant)

Individual leaflets or entire stems turn yellow, often starting with lower leaves, before eventually dropping.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Overwatering, by far the most common cause of ZZ Plant decline, since its rhizomes store substantial water
  2. 2Watering on a fixed schedule rather than checking actual soil dryness
  3. 3Natural aging of the oldest leaflets, in mild, isolated cases

Solution Steps

  1. 1Check soil moisture and drastically reduce watering frequency if it's been kept consistently moist
  2. 2Water only when the soil is completely dry, checking by feel rather than a calendar
  3. 3Check the rhizome for rot if yellowing is widespread across a whole stem
  4. 4Accept isolated old-leaflet yellowing as normal if the rest of the plant looks healthy

Prevention Tip

ZZ Plant's underground rhizomes store enough water to go weeks without watering — widespread yellowing is almost always a sign of too much water, not too little.
