Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV)
Commonly affects: Musa acuminata, M. balbisiana (Banana)
New leaves emerge progressively smaller, narrower, and more upright, giving the plant a stunted, bunched rosette appearance at the top. Dark green streaks ('Morse code' pattern) appear along leaf veins and petioles.
Potential Causes
- 1A virus transmitted exclusively by banana aphids feeding on infected plants
- 2Infected planting material (suckers) spreading the virus directly
- 3Nearby infected wild or ornamental banana relatives acting as a reservoir
Solution Steps
- 1Remove and destroy infected plants immediately, including the corm â there is no cure
- 2Control banana aphid populations aggressively to stop further spread
- 3Source certified virus-free planting material for new plantings
- 4Remove wild banana relatives nearby that could harbour the virus
Prevention Tip
Since BBTV has no cure, aggressive aphid control and using only certified virus-free planting material are the only effective prevention.
