Root Rot in Palms

Commonly affects: Various palms (Arecaceae)

The plant declines with yellowing or wilting fronds despite adequate watering, and roots appear brown, mushy, or hollow when checked.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Overwatering combined with poorly-draining soil or a pot without adequate drainage
  2. 2Waterlogged conditions, particularly in outdoor plantings with poor soil drainage
  3. 3A pot too large for the plant's current root system, holding excess moisture

Solution Steps

  1. 1Remove the plant from its pot and trim away all rotten roots with a sterilised blade if container-grown
  2. 2Repot into fresh, well-draining potting mix
  3. 3Improve drainage for outdoor plantings, such as by amending heavy clay soil or planting on a slight mound
  4. 4Reduce watering frequency going forward, letting the topsoil dry between waterings
