Papaya Ringspot Virus (PRSV)

Commonly affects: Carica papaya (Papaya)

Leaves develop a mottled mosaic pattern with distorted, narrow, sometimes shoestring-like shape, and fruit shows characteristic concentric ring-shaped water-soaked spots.

Potential Causes

  1. 1A potyvirus transmitted by aphids feeding on infected plants first
  2. 2Infected nearby papaya or cucurbit plants acting as a virus reservoir
  3. 3No cure exists once a plant is infected

Solution Steps

  1. 1Remove and destroy infected plants promptly to reduce the source of further spread
  2. 2Control aphid populations aggressively, since they're the primary transmission route
  3. 3Plant PRSV-resistant or tolerant varieties where available
  4. 4Space new plantings away from known infected trees or areas

Prevention Tip

PRSV has devastated papaya production in many regions — resistant varieties (including some genetically modified lines) are the most effective long-term solution where available.
