Root Rot in Pumpkin Plants
Commonly affects: Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima, C. moschata (Pumpkin)
The vine wilts and declines despite seemingly adequate soil moisture. When checked, roots appear brown, soft, and mushy rather than firm and white, sometimes with a sour smell from the soil.
Potential Causes
- 1Overwatering or poor drainage keeping the root zone waterlogged for extended periods
- 2Heavy, compacted soil restricting oxygen availability to roots
- 3Fungal pathogens such as Pythium or Phytophthora thriving in saturated soil
Solution Steps
- 1Improve soil drainage by working in compost or coarse organic matter before future plantings.
- 2Reduce watering frequency, allowing the soil to dry out somewhat between waterings.
- 3Avoid planting in low-lying areas of the garden that collect standing water after rain.
- 4In raised beds or mounds, ensure adequate height above the surrounding grade for drainage.
Prevention Tip
Growing pumpkins on slightly raised mounds is a traditional technique specifically because it improves drainage around the root zone, preventing the waterlogging that leads to root rot.
